The Division of Orthopaedics at CHOP is one of the largest and most active pediatric orthopaedic centers in the world. The division provides a full range of services, with a special focus on the most complex musculoskeletal disorders, such as cerebral palsy, cancer and rare genetic conditions. Each year, more than 3,000 children receive individualized, compassionate care from CHOP’s orthopaedic team.

Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Program

Bone and soft tissue tumors are complex and can be difficult to diagnose. There are also many treatment options available, and some children will need a combination of these therapies. Whether your child has a benign tumor or malignant tumor (also called a sarcoma), or you’re seeking a second opinion after a recent diagnosis, the experts at the Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Program at CHOP will provide your family with personalized care. Our team approach to treatment means specialists from several areas collaborate in the care of each and every patient to provide your family with the best possible outcome.

Spine Program

The Spine Program at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is one of the largest multidisciplinary programs in the world dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric spine conditions.

CHOP’s Spine Program provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment to thousands of babies, children and teenagers with spinal deformities, trauma-related spinal conditions, benign and malignant musculoskeletal tumors, genetic cervical spine conditions and other conditions that affect the spine.

Center for Thoracic Insufficiency Syndrome

Thoracic insufficiency syndrome (TIS) is a complex condition involving chest wall deformities that affect normal breathing and lung growth. Children with TIS are born with a variety of genetic disorders that cause spine and rib cage differences. These congenital deformities can limit a child’s respiration to such an extent that he becomes ventilator dependent.

The Center for Thoracic Insufficiency Syndrome at CHOP provides the highest level of multispecialty medical and surgical care in the world for children with thoracic insufficiency syndrome. The center is dedicated to improving care, advancing research and developing long-term treatments for children with TIS. The center’s director invented the vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib (VEPTR), the only FDA-approved device to treat TIS, and performs more than 200 VEPTR and other growth-sparing surgeries a year.

Center staff include orthopaedic surgeons and a coordinated team of other specialists from general surgery, pulmonology, intensive care, bioengineering and radiology. The program’s multidisciplinary approach ensures excellent patient care and promotes the development of improved medical and surgical treatments for TIS.

Limb Deformity Program

The care of children with limb length differences and limb deformities is complex. As a child grows and changes, so does the deformity — exaggerating the difference in length or an abnormal bend or rotation of the arm or leg. The experts of the Limb Deformity Program at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia understand these complexities. They provide expert assessment of your child's congenital or acquired deformity of the leg, arm, hip, foot or hand; predict changes as he grows; and offer surgical treatment options.

The Limb Deformity team uses the most cutting-edge diagnostic tools to plan for your child’s care. Our team will use the EOS Imaging System to assess your child’s condition. EOS is a low-dose, 3-D imaging system that scans your child standing up. An EOS scan shows us your child's natural, weight-bearing posture and allows us to see the interaction between the joints and the rest of the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine, hips and legs. This provides us with the most accurate view of the musculoskeletal system, which is essential for proper diagnosis and personalized treatment planning.

Hip Disorders Program

The Hip Disorders Program at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia specializes in diagnosis, treatment, and long-term follow-up for infants, children, teens and young adults with congenital, developmental and post-traumatic hip disorders.

Whether your child is a premature infant with a congenital hip deformity, a teen with a newly-developed hip problem, or a young adult with lingering effects of pediatric hip disease, our specially trained orthopaedic team has the expertise and experience needed to produce the best outcomes.

John M. "Jack" Flynn, MD, is the Chief of the Division of Orthopaedics. He is also the Richard M. Armstrong, Jr. Endowed Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery, and the associate director of the Trauma Center.
